Illustrative example: the permission slip
The slip takes thirty seconds to sign. Remembering it exists, finding it, and checking it went back to school is what Lena carries all week.
For anyone holding the household in their head
Mental load is the unseen work of planning, remembering and checking that sits behind household and family tasks: noticing the form is due, booking the appointment, checking it happened. Research links more of this cognitive labor with lower wellbeing in some groups, but that is an association, not proof of cause. Writing it down and naming owners makes it visible.

Chris and Alex realize Chris does most of the tasks but Alex does most of the remembering. They list everything with an owner for the remembering, not just the doing.
